I know Prof. Madhu
since 1974 when he joined the Department of Psychology, Andhra University as a
student. I was his senior and from the first day I met him, we had good
rapport. He always had a calm and friendly nature and was a perfect gentleman which
he continues to be even today. One thing which is unique about him is that I
never saw him losing his temper or getting angry with anyone. I never heard him
gossiping or talking bad about anyone including those who used to criticise
him.
I remember very
well a major life decision he had to make. He got an opportunity to go to the
USA and settle there. He was in a dilemma and I advised him to go. Many in the
department who were offered much lesser opportunities had in fact left our
University. But Madhu stayed back because of his attachment to his family and
the University. Thus a loss to an American University turned out to be enormous
gain to the Andhra University.
We shared many good
moments in the department. We worked together and have always concurred and
supported each other in the academic and administrative aspects of the
department. Madhu is a very good teacher and he had a unique style of teaching.
His teaching style was interactive and he used to encourage students to express
themselves in the class. If many of our Telugu medium students have come out of
their stage fear today and doing well, it is because of his style of teaching.
He is an accomplished researcher and has guided the maximum number of Ph.Ds in
the department. His contribution in health psychology especially on diabetics
is well recognised. We both worked together in psychometry and if not for his
inputs we would not be having the bilingual instruments in adjustment and Achenbach scales.
Many of us have
encouraged and groomed only those students who are academically brilliant. But,
Madhu took many average and underprivileged students under his wing and moulded
and guided them in such a way that some of them have now occupied very high
positions which they could never dreamt of. They should always be indebted to
him.
I wish Madhu all
the best on his retirement from the University service and wish him a more
productive academic life for many more years. There are many institutions which
require his expertise in teaching and research. I feel sad and sorry that the Andhra University
is losing a good academician who has a lot more academics still potently present
in him.
